Historically, as early as 7BC the Romans named a province Alpes Maritimae - the capital was then Cemenelum, today Cimiez, a suburb in the North of Nice. In 1860, when Nice became French, it was still a small town and the department had fewer than 200,000 inhabitants. However, the population grew quickly from 300,000 at the beginning of the 20th century to over a million. With a distinctly Italian flavour, Nice has been a favourite with English speaking visitors for over 200 years and is now the fifth largest and second most visited city in France. There are panoramic views from the Parc de Chateau and long pebbly beaches for sun-worshippers. In Cimiez, Roman bath ruins testify to its importance at the height of the Roman empire.
